Trojans end Comets' hot winning streak, roll to a 3-0 NSAA road sweep

MAYVILLE, N.D. – Mayville State (N.D.) was riding an impressive 10-match winning streak prior to Saturday's North Star Athletic Association conference match with Dakota State after a 3-2 upset victory over No. 14-ranked Bellevue (Neb.) Friday evening.  The Trojans ended the Comets' winning streak by rolling to a 3-0 sweep at Lewy Lee Fieldhouse.


Set scores were 25-20, 25-15 and 25-12.


Dakota State raised their overall record to 7-6 and remained undefeated in the North Star conference play with a 2-0 record.  Mayville State fell to 11-7 overall record and 1-1 NSAA conference record.  The Trojans won the last six meetings with the Comets.


DSU kicks off their five-match home stand on Wednesday evening.  The Trojans host in-state rival Mount Marty (S.D.) in a non-conference.  The junior varsity match gets underway at 6 p.m., followed by the varsity match at 7:30 p.m.  Both matches will be held at DSU Fieldhouse in Madison.

The Trojans and Comets went through a see-saw battle in the first 21 rallies.  Leading 11-10, Dakota State reeled off seven consecutive points to widen their lead to 18-11.

MSU got no closer than three points at 21-18 in the first set.  DSU secured the opening set by the score of 25-20 after Maddie Polzin's kill.  DSU smashed 20 kills in the first set and hit .234 (9 errors in 47 swings).  Mayville State was held to .140 hitting percentage (11 kills with 5 errors in 43 attempts).

Dakota State raced to an 18-9 lead in the second set and never looked back for a 25-15 victory, extending their match lead to 2-0.  The Trojans racked up eight team blocks in the second set and recorded 13 kills.  The Comets were held to a negative .100 hitting efficiency with six kills and committed 10 attack errors in 40 swings.

DSU cruised to 19-7 lead in the third set and dominated MSU by the score of 25-12 to complete a three-set sweep.  Dakota State smashed 19 kills with an impressive hitting percentage of .378 (5 errors in 37 attempts).  Mayville State only recorded five kills with three errors in 33 swings (.061 hitting efficiency).

Barbara Briceno posted a double-double of 15 kills and collected 20 digs for the Trojans.  She hit .433 in the match.  Polzin added 15 kills and recorded a hitting percentage of .385.  She had three service aces.  Samantha Zell and Riley Grandpre each added seven kills.

Rachel Johnson produced a double-double of 26 set assists and 15 digs for DSU.  Nicole Sarringar added 19 set assists.

Peyton Groft had a match-high 26 digs (tied for career high digs – vs. Montana Western on Sept. 14) in the match for Dakota State.  Grandpre had five blocks (1 solo, 4 assist).

Victoria Johnson led the Comets with seven kills.  She also had four block assists.  Hannah Bliss recorded five kills.  Elora Passa had 16 set assists.  Jayden Warner tallied 20 digs.  Kiana Johnson registered five blocks (1 solo, 4 assist). 

Dakota State hit .244 as a team with 52 kills and 22 errors in 123 swings.  Mayville State was held to .034 hitting percentage (22 kills with 18 errors in 116 attempts).

The Trojans had ten blocks in the match compared to the Comets nine blocks.  DSU had five service aces, while MSU recorded no service aces.  Dakota State collected 76 digs to Mayville State 49 digs.

Dakota State won the junior varsity match in three sets over Mayville State.
